Spring Break and Covid 19 update

Spring Break and Covid 19 update
Posted on 03/18/2020

Good Morning UPA Community,

I participated in the California Department of Education webinar today to discuss the ongoing efforts and impacts of the recent school closures.  The most important takeaway is this:

The statements from Governor Newsom about extending school closures into the summer is NOT an OFFICIAL STATEMENT.  UPA will follow the directives of the Santa Clara County Office of Education and Public Health.  The timeline for reopening is not official - UPA is intending to reopen the moment we get the all clear.

The amazing teaching staff will continue to provide distance learning and post lessons and resources every day by 8 AM and collect work at 8 PM.  If your child needs extra time, please email the teacher directly and s/he will provide more time.  It is critical that students continue to engage in their coursework and academic growth.   Our instructors will continue to revise and improve the lessons with the full acknowledgement of the emotional and family toll the shelter in place is taking.

We are making one important change: Spring Break will be moved to April 6-10, 2020.  The change from April 13-17 will allow for any extensions to the shelter in place or school closure and allow us to do a deep cleaning of the campus.  I know this could have a negative impact for your family and I do apologize for the inconvenience.  Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

The UPA administration has outlined some very specific next steps that will take place this week:

  • Finalizing and publishing teaching and learning guidelines for distance learning
  • Preparing 30 more hotspots for any family needing improved internet access
  • Reaching out to IEP, 504, and EL students to check on academic growth and to determine if there are any needs
  • Reaching out to our families that qualify for Free/Reduced lunch to see if they need any assistance
  • Responding to any/all parent concerns

On behalf of the entire UPA Staff, thank you for being part of our community.  It is only in partnership and togetherness that we will get through this challenging time.  We are here to support you any way we can.

The staff at UPA are dedicated to the serving the whole child.  If you, your family, or your child is struggling emotionally with the school closures, our mental health professionals are ready to serve.

Parents/students  may schedule an appointment by contacting Advent by phone, email, or text. They should identify themselves as a UPA parent/student to receive the support for free. (This is also so we can track who utilizes the service.)
