Covid 19 Update 03-12-2020
Posted on 03/12/2020

Good Evening UPA Community,

Thank you for being so patient as we navigate through the everchanging landscape that Covid 19 has caused.  Beyond the potential secondary contact I mentioned a few days ago, we continue to be virus-free.  The most recent news reports about restricted international travel, the suspension of national sports leagues, and the listing of Covid 19 as a pandemic by the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) has left us all a little shaken.

Locally, many private schools have suspended school for two weeks, and there have been two isolated cases in San Jose high schools.  I would not fault you for wondering if or when UPA will follow suit and suspend classes.   A few of you have called and emailed with that very question, and I brought it up with the county office of education and health department today.  The decision to close a public school requires that we have multiple direct Covid 19 cases and that there is a high likelihood of community spread.   The choice is not mine to make alone; it has to be done in conjunction and with the approval of the Santa Clara County Office of Education and the Santa Clara County Health Department.  Both organizations are not calling for that as of today, but we all agree that things can change quickly.  If anything does change, I will alert you immediately.

The decision to remove your child from school during the Covid 19 outbreak is a personal decision and a dilemma.  All I can do is give you the facts:

  • If your child is well but does not attend school, they will be marked as an unexcused absence
  • If your child is homesick, we will not require any documentation and the absence will be excused
  • We do not have any cases of Covid 19 and UPA will remain open

We have implemented a few changes as of today that should help us navigate the next few weeks, in addition to the previously implemented safeguards:

  1. Teachers have been directed (and will be compensated) to upload all course assignments, notes, slide decks, whiteboard notes, and resources daily.  Please expect to see those resources starting Friday, March 13th, after 3 PM.  Teachers will post all work using PowerSchool and through Google Classroom.
  2. We have worked with the Cathedral of Faith to suspend the senior aerobics and weight training courses.
  3. We are not allowing visitors to the campus, except for parents.
  4. We are testing our text alert system for parents

The staff at UPA has been instrumental in ensuring the health and safety of our students, and I know they will continue to provide a high quality of service.   Our top priority is your children.

I am proud to be part of the UPA community; we will get through this difficult time together.    Please do not hesitate to reach out via email dporter@upatoday.com or my cell phone 408-460-5912 text or call.

Sincerely,

David Porter
